Story

Witsend's guard has watched the pass for twenty years without missing a shift. She has a favour to ask.

Twenty years, one guard, zero missed shifts. Beryl has kept Witsend's watch through the lean years and the bad ones, and in all that time she has asked the town for nothing. Now travellers speak of an organised camp off the old road, and organised is not a word bandits know. She wants a look. She needs someone on the post. One shift, she says. Back before dusk, she says. She is never late. Ask anyone.
