Why people look for a Habitica alternative

Habitica is free, actively developed and has a big community, so staying is a perfectly good choice. People who leave usually do so for one of these reasons:

  • The pressure. Missed Dailies cost health, and in a party boss fight your missed Dailies hurt your friends too. Some people thrive on that. Others quit.
  • The look. The retro pixel-art style isn't for everyone.
  • It's less social than it was. Habitica removed its Guilds and public Tavern chat in 2023. Parties, challenges and private messages remain.
  • No built-in progress charts. Habitica's own FAQ points you to a data export instead.
  • The game becomes a chore. Keeping your character alive is one more thing to manage.

1. LevlaOur app

Best for: A modern habit and to-do tracker with an idle RPG

Platforms
iPhone and Android, plus a web app for habits and to-dos
Price
Free; membership $5.99 a month, $49.99 a year or $99.99 lifetime

Levla is the closest thing to a modern Habitica. Habits, to-dos and daily reflections earn Stamina, XP and Coins, and your character spends them on idle adventures that run for 1 to 8 hours. The game goes deeper than most habit apps, with 18 RuneScape-style skills, monsters and dungeons, crafting, farming, guilds and a player-run Trading Post.

The big difference is pressure. By default, missed habits in Levla don't cost health, gold or gear; the main thing you lose is a streak. If you'll miss Habitica's stakes, Patch 22 adds optional ones, along with friends, shared to-do lists and 1-on-1 Duels. And the characters are hand-drawn and animated rather than pixel art. Levla's heroes are hand-drawn and animated, not pixel art.
The Harmony's Rest guild, with its weekly habit, 5 Minutes of Silence, and the player's guild reputation at tier 6
Guilds give you reputation for the habits you keep.

Strengths

  • A full habit and to-do tracker, with daily reflections
  • An idle RPG with 18 skills that progresses while you're busy
  • Hand-drawn, animated characters
  • Unlimited habits and to-dos for free, with no ads

Trade-offs

  • Newer, with a smaller community than Habitica
  • No friends or co-op features until Patch 22
  • The game is phone-only; the web app covers habits and to-dos
  • Members-only regions and quests need a membership

2. LifeUp

Best for: Android users who want to design their own reward system

Platforms
Android (iPhone users can buy the separate ulives app)
Price
$4.99 one-time

LifeUp is a highly customizable gamified to-do list and habit tracker. Tasks earn XP for skills you define and coins you spend in a shop you stock yourself, with real-life treats, loot boxes, crafting and custom achievements. There's no avatar or game world: the game is the reward economy you build.

Strengths

  • Almost everything is customizable
  • One-time price, with no subscription or ads
  • Works offline, with no account needed

Trade-offs

  • Android only
  • Setting it up takes time
  • No character or story

3. Habit Hunter

Best for: Goal planning with a classic RPG layer

Platforms
iPhone and Android
Price
Free with ads; in-app purchases to upgrade

Habit Hunter has been around since 2018 and mixes habits, tasks and S.M.A.R.T. goals with a hero who earns XP and gold. Gold buys weapons, armor and skills, and social quests let you team up with friends. Recent updates added a Pomodoro timer and home-screen widgets.

Strengths

  • Goal planning built in
  • Social quests with friends
  • On both iPhone and Android

Trade-offs

  • Ads in the free version
  • Some features and content are behind in-app purchases

4. Habicat

Best for: Cute pixel art and monthly boss challenges

Platforms
iPhone and Android
Price
Free for up to 6 habits; $2.99 a month, $14.99 a year or $28.99 lifetime

Habicat keeps Habitica's pixel-art charm but focuses on habit check-ins. Each check-in earns EXP and currency for chests of gear and outfits, and a 30-day boss challenge each month rewards badges. It also has detailed weekly, monthly and yearly stats, which Habitica doesn't.

Strengths

  • Charming pixel art and cat widgets
  • Monthly boss challenges
  • Detailed stats and heatmaps

Trade-offs

  • The free plan is limited to 6 habits
  • Built around recurring habits rather than one-off to-dos

5. Do It Now

Best for: An RPG to-do list built around skills rather than combat

Platforms
Android
Price
Free with ads; in-app purchases

Do It Now represents you as an RPG hero with XP, levels, skills and characteristics. You rate each task's difficulty, importance and fear, link it to skills, and spend gold on real-life rewards you define. It has been on Android since 2016, with flexible repeats and calendar views.

Strengths

  • Skill-based progression tied to your real tasks
  • Very flexible scheduling
  • A long track record, with over a million downloads

Trade-offs

  • Android only
  • Ads in the free version
  • Setup takes time

6. Finch

Best for: Gentle self-care instead of stakes

Platforms
iPhone and Android
Price
Free; Finch Plus $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year

Finch swaps Habitica's stakes for kindness. Completing your daily goals gives your pet bird energy for its daily adventure, and it comes back with stories and Rainbow Stones for outfits and furniture. Reflection prompts, mood check-ins and breathing exercises are built in.

It's the right switch if Habitica's damage made you feel worse rather than better. It's less of a game and less of a planner, though: goals double as your to-do list, and there's no combat or character build. See Habitica vs Finch.

Strengths

  • Gentle by design, with no penalties for missed goals
  • Reflection, mood and breathing tools built in
  • A huge, supportive community

Trade-offs

  • Not a full to-do app or RPG
  • Some content and event rewards need Finch Plus

7. Streaks

Best for: iPhone users who want to drop the game

Platforms
iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac
Price
$5.99 one-time

If what you really want is to stop managing a game, Streaks is one of the best-made habit trackers on Apple devices. You track up to 24 habits, each with its own streak, and many can complete automatically from Apple Health. There are no points or levels, just streaks.

Strengths

  • One-time price, with no subscription
  • Apple Health and Apple Watch integration
  • An Apple Design Award winner

Trade-offs

  • Apple devices only
  • A maximum of 24 tasks
  • No game elements

8. Loop Habit Tracker

Best for: Android users who want a free, private tracker

Platforms
Android
Price
Free and open source

Loop is the Android equivalent: free, open source, no ads and no account. Instead of a game, each habit gets a strength score that rises with consistency and dips gently when you miss a day, with detailed charts alongside.

Strengths

  • Completely free, with no ads
  • A forgiving habit-strength score
  • Private: works offline, with no account

Trade-offs

  • Android only
  • No cloud sync
  • No game elements

Levla is ours, so it's listed first; the rest run roughly from the most game-like to the simplest.
